Column by The Post's Jan Perry
Well -- it's that time again, the time when I search out all the worst ghouls and most terrible ghosts to haunt you, er, I mean help you have the best Halloween season ever.
Next week I'll pull out some of my personal favorites and describe them in some detail so you'll know what to expect. Not that I'll give away any secrets or reveal any surprises, but I will rate them as to age appropriateness and gore factors.
Today, I thought I'd provide true enthusiasts with some lists of lists -- pages that offer their own opinions on which sites are the best. Some of the ones I'll write about later will undoubtedly be included in these compilations. But there are just so many good trick-or-treat- themed pages; these lists will let you explore some I won't have space to mention.
www.kidsites.com. Let's start out with something safe for the younger goblin watchers among us. Not only is there an entire section dedicated to the FamilyFun.Go site, but there also are links to kid-friendly sites from "Woman's Day," Billy Bear, Ben & Jerry and Playtonium, among others.
www.halloweenlinks.com. Ok, now that we have the little ones taken care of, it's time to get down to the truly scary stuff. Actually, the Labyrinth of Links has sites for everyone, but it is clearly aimed at the older aficionado. The links here are on inside pages. My suggestion is to click on the "recommended sites" prompt first. This section lists names and descriptions with enough details to limit your search time. If you manage to make it through all of those and want to continue on through the alphabetical additions, you'll find them listed by site name only, but sometimes that's enough -- as in the Banshee's Domain or the Sanitarium of Horror.
www.darklinks.com. Offering some of the scariest stuff on the Web (and only part of it is about Halloween), the Dark Links site invites guests to visit "the dark side of the Net." There are lots of Goth site links, as well as fiction, art entertainment, and some truly haunting pages that are too cool ever for ghouls. (Sorry couldn't resist!) And, of course there's a big section of holiday favorites right in the middle.
http://members.cyberz.net/jkeepes/halloween.htm. Tons of links, each with a brief (very brief) description. Most of these are fine for all ages. You can pretty much tell the truly scary ones, but I'd recommend a quick check before you bring in the little ones.
http://halloween.dvdesign.com. This is just a great collection of sites. Just like the sorting hat at Harry Potter's Hogwarts School, the sorting here is all done for you. Choose a category and you'll pull up anywhere from 20 to 200 sites dedicated to the subject at hand. And since the art and music selections here are pretty cool on their own, I'd recommend you pull up every section just to hum along and see its ghost, uh, I mean host.
http://home.pon.net/kenw/bestoweb/haloween.htm. All you get here is a list of short descriptive categories. Click on any one and you'll pull up a new page with dozens of sites that fall under that particular heading. And believe it or not, there are some listed here that jump to other lists of links and some of those links are to entire Web-Rings filled with automatic links to all the other sites in the ring. Whew! I told you there were a lot of Halloween sites out there!
