Halloween (or ''Howl-o-ween'' as Mitch Cummins of Boone County put it in his e-mail) is upon us. Here are some more spooktacular sites to drive you batty.
http://www.angelfire.com/ca2/buckspook/index.html. This is the one Mitch sent to me. It is choose-your-own-path story with spooky music, sound effects, drawings and animations added along the way. This might be too scary for really young children, but should be fine for tweens and teens. By the way - watch out for the trickster, I understand he's a mischievous fellow.
http://shanmonster.lilsproutz.com/witch. This was my favorite of three sites sent in by Elizabeth Runyon of the news and public information office at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, who wrote:
''Hi Jan. Here are three 'witch' sites, included in references for a new book by Miami University history professor Robert W. Thurston. Book title: 'Witch, Wicce, Mother Goose: The Rise and Fall of the Witch Hunts in Europe and North America.''
The other two sites she mentioned were:
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/features/97/salem.
http://www.hulford.co.uk/intro.html.
Bill Waltz, a fellow Post person who, with his son, have contributed roller coaster sites in the past, suggested this one from the Good 4 a Smile site: http://www.good4asmile.com/halloween.htm. This is a family-friendly fright site. Some jokes are clever while a few are a bit corny. Either way, you're sure to groan at some and moan at others. But since those are the sounds of the season, join the crowd.
http://www.benjerry.com/halloween/crafts.html. Besides making devilishly delicious ice cream, the good folks at Ben and Jerry's invite you to visit their haunted house, play Scoop Snatchers and help build a virtual pumpkin.
http://www.geocities.com/fullmoongirl/halloween98. Another pick and click adventure, this one from several years ago, offers a choose until you lose storyline with a kinder, gentler plot.
http://www.oliversfunpages.com. Truly one for the family, Oliver and his dad have been updating this site for six years, adding to it and upgrading the graphics. This year they've added a ''Spook Gauge'' that lets you choose between three levels of intensity: ''I'm a little kid take it easy,'' ''I'm pretty brave'' and ''Go ahead, scare the snot out of me.'' If only all Web sites were that accommodating. (One thing - I'm not sure why, but the whole time I was visiting this site, I had the strange feeling someone was watching me.)
