Virtual Halloween haunts lurk on Web

OK, all you ghoulish girls, scary hairys, spooks and kooks - it's time to travel through the tombstones and visit some abandoned monster mansions where the haunters are the hunters.

Creep carefully, and know for certain that YOU are what they seek.

http://www.cstone.net/bry-back/holidayfun/ween.html. This is a not-too-scary site I'd recommend for the little ones. There are some Halloween icons and some clip art for those who need it. Both Mac and Windows welcome here.

http://www.meddybemps.com/halloween/ghostwalk.html. Another one that is just for kids comes from Chateau Meddybemps. The art is cute, the fun non-frightening, and there's something special some Cincinnati residents will recognize. (If you help Forgwart cast a few spells, you may run across a familiar mascot.)

http://www.cyberhaunt.com. This one has a lot going on. Sent in by Jane Margason from Indiana, here is her description: ''The mansion is an animated 'tour' all in tones of black, white, grey and lots of red - that's all blood. NOT for children. Perhaps a bit too tame for adults or late teens, but perfect for 12- to 14-year-old boys looking for gross stuff. The pumpkin carving is more for all ages although little ones may not have the coordination to move the knife and candle around.'' I would only add that the Cyberstage Show, Costume Maker, Ozmo the Oracle and Cyber Carnival are all safe for the whole family. Alien Abduction could even be unsettling to adults, so I'd skip it with kids.

http://www.zurichmansion.org. Originally created as a fund-raiser for charity, Zurich Mansion is now a virtual haunted house and successfully creates an atmosphere of fear. Explore all the rooms for information about real haunt ed houses, castles and mansions. Best for teens on up.

http://www.janscourtyard.com. I had to mention this one, just because of the name. But the art is unique and the music is far from ordinary spook stuff.

http://www.hal-pc.org/nghthawk/haunted/index.html. This one is easy to explore (although not necessarily easy to solve.) The fun twists, sense of humor, mood music and scattered video animations make it worth the effort.

http://www.bonegarden.com. One of the all-time best - the season just wouldn't be BOOtaVicious without a visit to Bonegarden Estate. Take your time to be sure your cursor finds all the ''hot spots'' along the way. (NOTE: If you call up the ''map,'' what you get is a room list for each of the five floors. It's useful, though, to jump from floor to floor - just click and go.)
